Stewed Tomatoes/"Gobbledygook"

  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, with liquid
  • 3 slices stale bread, torn into pieces
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 1 1/2 quart baking dish.
  2. Stir the tomatoes, bread, sugar, butter, salt, and pepper in a bowl; pour into the prepared dish.
  3. Bake until hot and the tomatoes are tender, about 45 minutes.
Dad and I were talking about the stewed tomatoes that Grandma used to make. I am not sure how close these are to her recipe, but I really enjoy it. -Sarah
