Homemade Buttermints
  • Servings: 60
  • Preparation Time: 30
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold and cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk
  • food coloring optional
  1. Beat chilled and diced butter with a hand mixer or a stand mixer on low until creamy and smooth
  2. Add confectioners’ sugar 1 cup at a time scraping the sides of the bowl as needed
  3. Increasing speed to medium-high mix sugar and butter until thoroughly combined. The consistency will be like grated Parmesan cheese.
  4. Add the 2 tablespoons of milk
  5. Add the 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract
  6. Continue to beat until smooth
  7. Consistency should be like thick frosting
  8. Make dough into a ball, several balls if adding food coloring
  9. Add the food coloring. I used a powder dye and sprinkled about 1/4 teaspoon into the dough ball
  10. Knead the dye in with your hands
  11. Cover dough balls with plastic wrap while working to prevent them from drying out.
  12. Dust a flat surface with confectioners’ sugar
  13. Make smaller balls golfball sized and roll into logs, straw-like shaped
  14. Using a knife or pizza cutter cut pieces off the log
  15. When finished cutting lay in a single layer on a paper towel lined cookie sheet or plate
  16. Dust the tops of the candies with confectioners’ sugar
  17. Allow to air dry at room temperature for about 12 hours
  18. When candies are firm store in an airtight container
