Chocolate Layer Cake

  • 1 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg, unbeaten
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup milk
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Measure and sift together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream butter until fluffy. Add sugar gradually until well blended.
  4. Add egg and vanilla; beat until light and fluffy.
  5. Sift half of flour mixture over egg mixture.
  6. Add half the milk and fold until smooth.
  7. Add remaining flour then milk. Fold again until smooth.
  8. Divide batter evenly and place in 2 greased 8-inch layer pans.
  9. Bake in 350°F oven for 30-35 minutes until done.
  10. Remove from oven and cool on rack about 10 minutes.
  11. Turn out of pan and let the cake completely cool.
  12. Frost as desired.
This is a rich and smooth chocolate layer cake with the frosting of your choice. Add a twist with a marble effect. Add the cocoa powder to half the recipe and swirl it together in each cake pan. It's a great recipe for cupcakes too!
