Why I Love This Recipe
These sandwiches are a family favorite. They truly do fit in the category of "On The Go" because my kids have hauled a boatload of these out of my house over the years. I always make extra for the trips home.
Ingredients You'll Need
1 lb ground beef
1 lb sausage
1 C. chopped onion
2 6 oz cans tomato paste
2/3 C. water
2 t. salt
1 t. oregano (add as much as you like)
4 T. Parmesean
16 oz. Mozzarella cheese sliced
10 steak buns or hoagie buns
Brown beef, sausage and onion until meats are browned and sausage is cooked through.
Stir in tomato paste, water, salt and oregano; simmer 10 minutes, stirring as needed. Add Parmesean cheese and simmer 5 minutes.
Line buns with Mozzarella.
Spoon filling on bun. Wrap sandwiches individually in foil and bake at 375 degrees 10 to 15 minutes.
These sandwiches may be refrigerated after wrapping in foil and baked/heated later.
When I make the meat filling, I don't measure the oregano; I season to taste.
Italian seasoning is good too.
More cheese is good also.
Provolone is a tasty substitute.
I suggest you recruit a helper so you can set up a production line.
If you set up your buns, line them with cheese, add your meat filling then wrap in foil, then place the sandwiches back in the bag the buns came from you can be done in no time.
Remember that your filling is cooked so the bake time is merely heating sufficiently to melt the cheese and heat the sandwich through.
The cheeses and seasonings should be altered to your taste.
The meat filling will appear to need more liquid but it thins somewhat as it is heated.
These are good to serve with pickles and chips on Christmas night or any time you're going to have a crowd but you don't want to spend all evening in the kitchen.
The stroms are a hearty sandwich that could become a favorite.
