This recipe is one of those "got to makes" when baking a ham! It is a tradition in this house. I am not too fussy about how fancy the potatoes go into the pan, but that's on you. You can carefully arrange them, like I did in the past or you can simply toss them into the pan, but remember to keep the layers. Actually, I think I did a "toss it all in" one time and that worked too. Basically, just do as you feel! Arranging the top layer can hide a multitude of sins. Haha.
Ingredients You'll Need
6 red potatoes, sliced - peeled or not, it's your choice
3 Tbsp flour
3-4 Tbsp butter, cut into small pieces
1 med onion, chopped
1 - 1 1/2 cups milk
salt & pepper
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
Grease a 9" X 13" deep baking dish or pan with melted butter, 1 Tablespoon should do. I use stoneware and so I skip this step when using that pan. (Can use a 9 X 13 glass pan as well.)
Spread about 1/3 of the potatoes into the bottom of the prepared dish.
Layer half of the chopped onions over the potatoes.
Dust with flour (I use a flour shaker, so no lumps!) and then salt & pepper over top. Dot with 1/3 or your butter.
Repeat layering. Then top layer is just potatoes, salt & pepper and last third of butter dotted on top.
Drizzle milk over top of all. You may sprinkle with paprika if you choose, I do not.
Bake in preheated 400 degree F oven until the top is browned to your liking, about 1 hour or so.
Cool 15 minutes before serving.
Pairs Well With
Ham, definitely ham!
