Breads and Pastry 101
Irish Soda Bread
White Sandwich Bread
Fruit Filled Turnovers
Chocolate Tea Bread
Lemon Pound Cake
Irish Soda BreadThis is the first loaf of bread I had ever made. It is perfect for beginners because it gets it's lift from baking soda and baking powder, instead of yeast. It is a slightly sweet bread, so breakfast or tea would be the best time for serving it.
Plain SconesPlain scone dough is the bases for almost all other scones, so it is important that you have a good recipe for it. This, I find is a great plain scone recipe. It makes light and fluffy scones every time. It is important to leave small chunks of butter in the dough so that it comes out of the oven nice and flaky.
White Sandwich BreadEverybody need a good recipe for both white and wheat sandwich bread. White sandwich bread is the most basic type of yeasted bread, wheat sandwich bread being the next step up. If you have mastered baking soda/baking powder breads and are ready to move to yeasted breads, white sandwich bread is a good start. A good baker should have a white sandwich bread mastered.
Fruit Filled TurnoversI first discovered these turnovers when some surprise guests showed up for dinner. I realized only half an hour before dinner that I had no desert planned. I quickly whipped out some left-over puff pastry and some holiday preserves and turned out a batch of these turn-overs. I was worried that they wouldn't come right, but they ended up being a hit! In fact, one of the guests even asked me for the recipe.
Chocolate Tea BreadI loved this bread growing up, and I still love it now! My grandmother made this bread for me overtime I would stay with her and now I make it for my kids. This quick bread is a perfect snack for the kids' lunch-boxes. It freezes well so I like to make two loaves and freeze one for later.
Lemon Pound CakeI love lemon. It is such a refreshing taste, so this pound cake is ideal for lemon-lovers like me. This pound cake has a subtle lemon flavor and is perfect for a summertime snack. This pound cake is great for when the kids have a friend over or for when unexpected company arrives. I always have it on hand.
